Gayndah Museum - the lungfish display

Lungfish are a rare freshwater fish now found only in Africa, South America and Australia. Here in Australia the lungfish is only found in south-east Queensland and their habitat is becoming more and more restricted.

There are plenty of lungfish found in the river around Gayndah and our town was used as the base for a survey of lungfish habitate conducted several years ago by the University of Queensland. We now have what has been described by experts as the best lungfish display in Queensland.

The lungfish display includes two live lungfish and an interpretive display that will help you understand the place this unique creature holds in our environment.
